Subtraction With Regrouping

Subtraction with Regrouping

Sometimes when we do multi-digit subtraction, we may encounter something like 5-9, and you cannot count 9 times backward from 5. Instead, we subtract one from the digit to the left and add 10 to the digit.

Example 1 : 58 - 19

5 - 1 = 4, but 8 - 9 is not on the list, so we must carry a 10

4 - 1 = 3 and 18 - 9 = 9

Example 2 : 83 - 39

8 - 3 = 5, but 3 - 9 is not on the list, so we must carry a 10

5 - 1 = 4 and 13 - 9 = 4
